A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the country's president.
The president reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its role in national projects. They were completed at an accelerated rate, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party urged an immediate suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
