The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it could look like typical biological terror, but within Together exists a intense contemplation about how we choose to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, gross (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He fears the concept of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in Together refrains from painting either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Both characters face the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships a decade in. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
